A condition called “delayed menarche” can also be attributed to celiac disease. Delayed menarche is where adolescents or young adult women do not get their first period until much later, usually in their late teens or early twenties. This condition is also referred to as “primary amenorrhea.” The case that was previously mentioned is an example of this condition where it was resolved by the patient adopting a gluten-free diet. This is one reason why some doctors would recommend the dietary change if other symptoms of celiac disease are present.
