The Impact of Celiac Disease on the Menstrual Cycle

The signs that may show only in children and adolescents

For teens, delayed menarche might raise a red flag in regards to the possibility of celiac. But, usually some of the symptoms are similar to those an adult might experience. However, there are some signs that are unique to children and youth. These include:

  • Delayed growth and late onset of puberty (or periods that never start)
  • Bone loss or compromised bone development
  • Psychiatric disorders, such as ADHD, autism, depression, and anxiety

Overall, a child or teen would be experiencing both the digestion issues and delays in development, like primary amenorrhea.
