How Breast Cancer Diagnosis and Support Have Changed

Breast Cancer : The medical care team

The medical care team

Common additional team members in the U.S. are an oncology surgeon and/or a radiation oncologist, as indicated. Also, pharmacists to dispense ordered medications and chemotherapy drugs. Additionally, an oncology nurse to prepare and administer the ordered medical treatment (That RN also teaches the patient and family on the action and possible side effects of treatment, and acts as a liaison between the patient and the oncologist.)

In addition, the team includes an oncology social worker to assist the patient and family in preventing or responding to any mental health or mood issues. She/he can also assist with lining up services for home care, financial needs, transportation to treatments, or clergy referrals, if desired.
