Therese M. Duane, MD, MBA, CPE, FACS, FCCM, is a reputed acute care surgeon with a rich background spanning over 25 years in academic medicine, clinical care, research, healthcare administration, and teaching.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Duane has achieved remarkable milestones, including being appointed as a full professor at three prestigious academic medical centers. Her leadership in quality and safety has garnered national recognition, as she served as the Quality Pillar Lead for the American College of Surgeons Board Governors. Dr. Duane has also played pivotal roles as a committee chair for the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the Surgical Infection Society, contributing significantly to the development of the acute care surgery model in underserved areas of the United States.

Having graduated from Cornell University in 1991 and the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 1995, Dr. Duane pursued her medical residency at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in surgical critical care at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Medical Center in 2001.

In 2016, she furthered her education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration Degree from UMass Amherst and earning the Certified Physician Executive distinction from the American Association for Physician Leadership.

Board certified in both surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Duane is recognized as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery. In addition, she holds membership status with many prestigious medical associations, including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American College of Surgery (Fellow), the American College of Critical Care Medicine (Fellow), the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Association of Women Surgeons, the Surgical Infection Society, the LD Britt Surgical Society, the American Association for Physician Leadership, and the Catholic Medical Association.

Focusing her research efforts on clinical outcomes, particularly in the field of surgical infections, Dr. Duane now serves as the Associate Editor of Surgical Infections, the primary journal for the Surgical Infection Society. She has over 200 publications, including abstracts, manuscripts, and book chapters and has had the honor of mentoring hundreds of students, residents, and young faculty to achieve their personal and academic goals.

In recent years, Dr. Duane has shifted her focus towards missionary work and locums, aiming to provide essential surgical coverage in remote areas to enhance patient care and resource utilization. The flexibility has allowed her to serve remote villages in Uganda as she expands her scope to other regions of the world. These efforts have earned her a Best in Texas magazine recognition as a Top Doctor in Surgery for 2024.

Driven by a passion for mentorship and advocacy, Dr. Duane aspires to raise awareness about the critical need for surgical services and to inspire others to contribute their time, talent, and resources. She is expanding her outreach through motivational speaking engagements, addressing burnout prevention in the workplace and guiding individuals in discovering their life purpose.

Highlighting her excellence in teaching, trauma care, mentorship, and professional achievements, Dr. Duane has been acknowledged through numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Teacher Award for Surgical Clerkship in 2010 from VCU School of Medicine, the Shining Knight Award for Excellence in Trauma Care in 2010, the Distinguished Mentor Award from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in 2012, the Mary C. McCarthy MD Endowed Lecturer in Trauma Surgery from Wright State School of Medicine in 2012, the WISDM Professional Achievement Award from Women in Science, Dentistry, and Medicine at VCU School of Medicine in 2012, the Top Critical Care Specialist by Texas Magazine Top Doctors in 2021, and the Shield Award for Excellence as General Surgery Program Director by Texas Health Resources, Ft. Worth in 2022.
