  • Should I get my son vaccinated after being scratched by a cat?

Children who are healthy with no problems with their immune system should recover without treatment. In children with a weak immune system, treatment with antibiotics usually has a recovery time within a week or two. There is no vaccine available for cat scratch disease. A child who has had contact with an infected cat can show some of the following: -Bump at the site of the injury (usually the first sign) -Fatigue -Fever (in some children) -Headache -Lymph node swelling near the site of the scratch or bite READ MORE

  • Is a Zyrtec regimen safe for kids?

As long as you use the proper dose as recommended by her pediatrician, it should be very safe. I am using it for babies that are 9 months old and above. If Zyrtec does not help your child's allergies, she might have a sinus infection that you need to treat first. Without treating the infection, Zyrtec will not work. READ MORE

  • What is the treatment for nighttime cough?

Never give any cough suppressant or expectorant to a child without finding the reason of the cough. Cough is a symptom of something going on in the child. It can be bacterial, viral, allergy, reflux, sinus drainage, habitual, etc. Treat the reason rather than the symptom only. READ MORE

  • What is the best way to clean ears of a newborn baby?

You are right! Do not clean the inside of the ear canal with Q tips. Q tips or cotton swab are often what causes a wax buildup. Instead, wash baby's outer ear gently with a washcloth and leave the canal alone; it's very rare for earwax to build up when cotton swabs are not being used. READ MORE

  • Is bread safe for toddlers?

Hello, This is a general answer and does not replace your consultation with your pediatrician. Each baby is different, but what is most important is to make sure your baby is not allergic to bread. Although an allergy to bread is very rare, it can happen. White bread is preferred because it is easier for babies to digest. It should be introduced in small amounts every day. Some parents introduce bread to their babies after 9 months old in small amounts. In my practice, I tell my patients to wait until the baby has his/her primordial molars that he/she can chew it. Bread is rich in fibers and good for health, but if babies eat lots of fiber, their appetite can be affected and as a result they will eat less. Food has a direct relation to the baby’s growth, so you should really be careful in regards to the amount of fiber you give your baby. READ MORE

  • How should I approach constipation in a 7 year old?

Constipation in children is very common. Instead of giving laxatives, I prefer to find why he is constipated. Treating the reason that caused the constipation is better than just giving laxatives. His pediatrician can examine him to rule out any of the following: -Encopresis (soiling his underwear) -Habitual constipation (some kids are too lazy to go to the bathroom because they are busy playing) -Dietary (their diet is low in fiber) -Anal fissure (a tear in the opening of the anus that can be caused from passing a dry, large, hard stool) and many other reasons. • If my child is lactose intolerant, will he be weak?

Since I was 2 years old I have been lactose intolerant. It never affected my mental or physical abilities. Eating cheese is an option, but if he does not like cheese, you can give him "LACTOSE INTOLERANT chewable tablets." They are over-the-counter and are safe for 2-year-old children. You may crush them and mix them with his food if he cannot chew them. It is important not to overuse them. READ MORE
