Get to know Family Physician Dr. James G. Wigington, who serves patients in Salida, Colorado.

Dr. Wigington is a board-certified family physician whose areas of interest include family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, as well as sports medicine. 

He is currently in practice at the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center (HRRMC), Salida Family Medicine. Located in Salida, Colorado, HRRMC is a nonprofit, community-focused Critical Access Hospital and Level IV Trauma Center dedicated to providing innovative, state-of-the-art care. HRRMC Salida Family Medicine provides comprehensive primary care across the lifespan, from obstetrics and pediatrics to gerontology.

HRRMC was named a Top 100 Critical Access Hospital in the U.S. in 2019, according to The National Rural Health Association’s Rural Health Policy Institute, iVantage Health Analytics, and The Chartis Center for Rural Health. The hospitals that are included in those lists are top performers in managing risk, achieving higher quality, securing better outcomes, increasing patient satisfaction, and operating at a lower cost than their peers. HRRMC was one of only three Critical Access Hospitals in Colorado named to the list.

On the subject of his educational background, Dr. Wigington earned his Medical Degree from the University of Colorado Denver in 2001. He then went on to complete his residency in family medicine at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado. 

Before long, he became board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties. 

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person whom a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility. 

Throughout his extensive career in family medicine, Dr. Wigington has been honored with several awards, including Patients’ Choice Award in 2013 and 2014, and Compassionate Doctor Recognition from 2012 to 2014.
