Is a c-section done under local anesthesia?
Good Afternoon, C-section is done with epidural anesthesia. The difference is that the anesthesiologist will put a small catheter into your back in sitting position. He or she will give you local anesthesia to numb the skin and a needle will be inserted into the epidural space. You will feel pressure but no sharp pain. As soon as the needle will be at the epidural space a thin catheter will be inserted through the needle. Local anesthetic medication will be infused through the catheter so you will not feel the labor pain. Whenever the surgery team decides to go for the C-section a bolus of local anesthetic medication will be given through the epidural catheter by the anesthesiologist so your skin will be numb and you will not feel when they open your abdomen and take out the baby. Does a breathing tube have to be used during the operation?
Dear Parent, Patients who have appendicitis need surgery in the majority of cases. There are 2 options: open abdominal surgery or laparoscopic surgery. The laparoscopic surgery is done in most of the cases today. In this situation CO2 is administered into the abdomen to make the intra-abdominal organs visible by small cameras and equipments. In our knowledge it is important to protect the airway in this situation from reflux of acidic contents from the stomach. Many patients with appendicitis have so called full stomach meaning that gastric content is staying longer time in the stomach because of the intra-abdominal inflammation. This increases the risk of reflux and aspiration of acidic contents into the lungs. Aspiration is a dangerous situation and can cause significant deterioration of lung function in extreme condition it can cause death. The risk for a possible devastating complication is big enough to push the anesthesiologists to protect the airway with a breathing tube during the surgery. Can you be put to sleep for a root canal while pregnant?
There is no clinical study showing that general anesthesia causes harm to the fetus. In general, no more congenital diseases after using general anesthesia during pregnancy. More low weight birth and spontaneous abortion may be associated to general anesthesia in the first trimester. Please keep in mind that the first trimester is a vulnerable period when the organs are developing, so the best thing is to avoid general anesthesia and surgeries at this time period. The best approach is to postpone surgical procedures after the delivery. Other option is to do local anesthesia for the root canal procedure. This procedure can be done with local anesthesia with minimal effect on the fetus. In summary: the safest way to do the root canal is after delivery. Can I be put to sleep for dental work while pregnant?
Anesthesia generally safe during the second trimester of pregnancy. There is some chance that the anesthetic agents have some long term effects on the developing brain especially if the general anesthesia lasts more than 3 hours. To avoid any adverse effect on the fetus I do not recommend general anesthesia for a tooth extraction. It can be done safely with local anesthesia. READ MORE
Do you need general anesthesia for endoscopy?
For endoscopy the key is a good topical anesthesia. The endoscopy team will prepare you for the procedure. They will give you either lidocaine lozenges or Cetacaine spray to decrease the gag reflexes. They also give you either oral or IV relaxing medications so you will not remember the procedure. There is no need for general anesthesia for most of the endoscopic procedures. If the endoscopic procedure is ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) you will have general anesthesia most likely. It is a long endoscopic procedure and sometimes painful also. Why is epinephrine used with lidocaine?
Epinephrin causes constriction of arteries close to the site of local anesthesia. In this way lidocaine stays longer on the site and its effect lasts 1.5-2-times longer. Sometimes epinephrine is getting into the circulation and causes increased heart rate and may increase the blood pressure also. This reaction can be misinterpreted as an allergic reaction. READ MORE
