A fellowship-trained gastroenterologist, Dr. Alikhan is affiliated with Lee Health. He currently practices at HealthPark Medical Center & Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida.
There, he specializes in diagnosing, treating, and preventing many problems of the digestive tract and related organs, including GERD/Barrett’s disease, colon cancer and polyps, among others.
“The GI tract is a very fascinating and diverse organ. It’s interrelated with the brain and nervous system, with hormones and the immune system. There’s a lot of complexity related to this organ, which makes it all extremely interesting” expressed the doctor.
With continuing fascination with function and complexity of the digestive tract, Dr. Alikhan finds that treating patients with GI problems gives him an opportunity to improve their quality of life. “It’s the impact I’m able to make on the lives of patients who come to us in times of distress: That makes it all worthwhile when we can ease pain, comfort patients, offer moral support and compassion. A Chicago native, Dr. Alikhan earned his medical degree from the Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 1992. He then did his internship and residency in internal medicine at Loyola University Medical Center, and completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at the Indiana University Medical Center under renowned physicians in the field such as Douglas Rex, MD; Glen A. Lehman, MD; and Stuart Sherman, MD.
Subsequent to his education, he attained board certification in gastroenterology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), Dr. Alikhan is an active member of the American College of Gastroenterology.
Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

One of his primary career objectives is educating the community about colorectal cancer prevention. He has written a number of articles, case reports, and abstracts for such pubs as the American Journal of Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
