Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Charles D. Rosen, who serves patients in Orange, California.

Being a highly-respected, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Rosen is recognized for his excellence and innovative approach to the care and treatment of the musculoskeletal system. At present, he is a part of the team of experts at UCI Health Orthopaedic Surgery Services in Orange, California. 

Creating unique treatment plans, he and his colleagues strive to diagnose and treat all conditions and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, no matter how complex. Their goal is to ease each patient’s pain, restore their quality of life, and have them moving freely again — as soon as possible.

Enjoying taking his time and talking with patients, Dr. Rosen’s specialty in spinal surgery focuses on patients with spinal degeneration, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, instability, and all related consequences of these conditions in the neck and lumbar spine. He is an expert at laminectomy procedures and other spine surgeries, treating numerous spinal stenosis patients each year. He also has a particular interest in treating patients with failed disc replacements, many of whom travel from around the country for his specific expertise. 

Alongside his clinical role, Dr. Rosen serves as a Clinical Professor within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. When he is not teaching residents, operating on patients, or advocating for better, more transparent patient care, he is spearheading research and writings in the fields of ethics and spinal biomechanics. 

A member of the North American Spine Society and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. 

At the start of his medical journey, Dr. Rosen earned his medical degree from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in 1983. He then went on to serve his internship in general surgery at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, followed by his residency in orthopaedic surgery at NYU Langone Orthopaedic Hospital. He also completed a fellowship in spine surgery and rehabilitation at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center. 

As President of the Association for Medical Ethics, Dr. Rosen co-founded the association with the intention of reducing the medical industry’s influence on doctors who are paid consultants. Additionally, his ambition was to provide a forum for the presentation of spinal surgery research without company bias. With these interests in mind, he and the Association for Medical Ethics inspired the Physicians Payment Sunshine Act. He was the only physician to testify before Congress to pass the law that now requires transparency within the medical industry, including disclosure of monies paid to researchers. 

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Among his numerous accolades, Dr. Rosen is the recipient of Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2010, 2011), Patients’ Choice Award (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014), and Top 10 Doctor – City (2014).
