On the subject of his educational background, Dr. Rao earned his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1990. He then went on to serve his internship and residency in internal medicine at the same educational venue in 1991 and 1993, respectively.

Years later, in 1999, he earned board certification in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
