Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Michelle L. Cantu, who serves patients in Texas.

Dr. Cantu, an established psychiatrist, treats children, adolescents, and adults at Michelle Cantu, MD, P.A. Her private practice includes office locations in San Antonio & Fredericksburg, Texas. 

Specializing in outpatient psychiatric services, her areas of expertise include psychiatric evaluation, medication management, brief psychotherapy, and consultation. Offering guidance and treatment, she works with each patient to implement a treatment plan to help them overcome their symptoms and improve their quality of life. 

In the early days of her academic career, Dr. Cantu graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. She attended medical school at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, where she received her medical degree. She then went on to complete a residency in general psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She served as co-chief resident during her fellowship training.

Following her training, she attained board certification in general psychiatry & child and adolescent psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.

In good standing with a number of professional organizations, Dr. Cantu is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Psychiatric Association, the Bexar County Psychiatric Society, the Bexar County Medical Society, the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians, the Clinical TMS Society, and the Texas Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is also affiliated with Hill Country Memorial Hospital.

Having been practicing psychiatry for over 15 years, she attributes her success to having a very supportive team and colleagues all working together to provide the best care for each person. She has medical students and nurse practitioner students shadow her in her practice.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

On a more personal note, she is a daughter, sister, wife, and mother. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, going to the beach, watching movies, camping, attending church, and playing with her children.
