Get to know Dentist Dr. Sarai Ruiz Nieves, who serves patients in Shelton, Connecticut.

A careful and professional dentist, Dr. Nieves works at Smile Dental Center in Shelton, Connecticut. She specializes in general dentistry, with expertise in full-mouth restoration, cosmetic cases, and the restoration of implants.

Seeing dentistry as one of her biggest passions, she understands that getting dental work can be overwhelming. For this reason, she tries to treat each patient with compassion to fulfill their needs.

Born and raised on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, Dr. Nieves graduated with honors from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in General Science and a minor in Biology. In 2009, she obtained her Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree from the University of Puerto Rico. She furthered her education with a General Practice Residency and Hospital Dentistry at Ohio State University. After her residency, she was also able to be part of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, expanding her dental care knowledge to comprehensively manage and treat children.

Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Dentists diagnose and treat dental issues and help patients develop better oral hygiene regimens. They clean teeth, correct bite issues, perform surgeries and extractions, and perform other duties to ensure that the teeth and mouth are healthy.

On a more personal note, Dr. Nieves and her husband moved to Connecticut in 2014, where she has been practicing since. They live in New Haven with their twin sons and two dogs.

In her spare time, Dr. Nieves enjoys training for marathons, traveling, and hiking with her dogs. She also enjoys the occasional Star Trek marathon and the sporadic Netflix binge.
