  • Can an x-ray show brain swelling?

    A radiograph or 2D X-ray does not show brain swelling, as the X-rays will not penetrate the skull (although an X-ray of the skull is a standard exam). However, a CT or MRI can indeed demonstrate if brain swelling is present. Note that CT creates the image with the use of X-rays in a way to create a cross sectional image and can use that data for images in other planes such as coronal and sagittal. MRI does NOT use X-rays, but rather radio wave (in a strong magnet) and hence is performed without radiation. READ MORE

  • Can you have a CT scan with dental implants?

    There are no health issues or contraindications with obtaining a CT with dental issues. With MRI, there are problems with certain metals or implanted devices, but the same is not true for CT. Metal in the body can lead to artifact that may focally degrade the image (for instance from a hip replacement), causing streaking of the surrounding tissue, limiting evaluation. Dental amalgam can cause focal limitation but only on a CT through that area, and usually does not cause a diagnostic dilemma. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • How much radiation is in an ultrasound?

    Hi! There is no radiation in an ultrasound which makes it an ideal modality where radiation is an issue or could be damaging. The image is created by sound waves - specifically taking advantage of the different rates of travel through different tissue thicknesses. Hope this helps. READ MORE

  • Does a dislocated shoulder show on an X-ray?

    The short answer is yes, a dislocated shoulder will show on an X-ray. The most common type of disclocation is anterior, and the easiest to see on the X-ray. Posterior dislocations are harder to identify, but a good radiologist will not have trouble. There could be an associated fracture to the humeral head or glenoid, and should be a comment if present or not. Hope this helps. READ MORE
