Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon & Sports Medicine Physician Dr. Anthony A. Romeo, who serves patients in Illinois.

A national and international leader in shoulder, elbow, and sports medicine conditions, Dr. Romeo gets patients back to sport, work, and play quickly. As a surgeon and researcher, he works at the intersection of science and sports to restore function using minimally invasive, cutting-edge techniques. His patients include individuals needing to get back to work, professional athletes seeking a return to a similar level of pre-injury performance, and those who are looking for an improved quality of life.

As a longtime member of the Chicago community, Dr. Romeo serves as the Executive Vice President of the Musculoskeletal Institute at DuPage Medical Group, operating out of their offices in Elmhurst and Westmont, Illinois. His clinical interests include pioneering new approaches, developing advanced orthopaedic implants and surgical procedures, and performing cutting-edge musculoskeletal research—all with a focus on positive patient outcomes.

“I entered the field of orthopaedic surgery to make a difference to patients and it brings me great joy to help individuals of all ages regain their potential physical performance and quality of life,” says Dr. Romeo. His meticulous approach accelerates the recovery process for challenging conditions such as rotator cuff disease, shoulder instability, and arthritis. Dr. Romeo has also pioneered outpatient shoulder replacement surgery, which can now be safely performed in the ambulatory surgery center environment. He performs rotator cuff repairs and stabilization procedures using minimally-invasive and state-of-the-art arthroscopic techniques. He also specializes in complex revision surgeries and routinely receives referrals from other orthopaedics surgeons to manage complex shoulder and elbow problems, including revision surgery or complications of previous care.

Dr. Romeo graduated with his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 1987. He then went on to perform his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1992, followed by his shoulder and elbow fellowship at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle in 1993.

Having spent 25 years practicing in Chicago, Dr. Romeo served as a team physician to The Chicago White Sox and The Chicago Bulls, and as a consultant for numerous NFL, NCAA, and Olympic level athletes for more than 15 years.

In 2018, he had the opportunity to move to New York City to serve as the Chief of Orthopaedics for the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in New York. His work included being on staff at Lenox Hill Hospital, as well as a full professorship in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell Health. He returned to the Chicago area in August 2020 to work in clinical leadership with the Dupage Medical Group as they developed a world-class musculoskeletal institute.

Dr. Romeo is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), an organization establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeon; a member of the International Society of Arthroscopy Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine; The Congress of the European Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and the Elbow; The American Orthopaedic Association; The American Shoulder and Elbow Society; The Arthroscopy Association of North America; The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine; The American Medical Association; The Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Society; The Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Honor Society; The Notre Dame Orthopaedic Society (Founder and Past President); The Herodicus Society; The Illinois Orthopaedic Society; The Chicago Medical Society; The Illinois State Medical Society; The Mid-America Orthopaedic Association; and the St. Louis University Medical School Alumni Association.

Having spent his career in the pursuit of excellence for his patients, Dr. Romeo travels the world teaching advanced surgical techniques, even performing live surgical procedures on patients while observed by large audiences of surgeons. He is a prolific medical researcher, publishing more than 400 peer-reviewed journal articles and 30 chapters in medical textbooks. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 papers on baseball injuries alone. As the Chief Medical Editor of Orthopaedics Today, a newspaper with more than 30,000 subscribers, Dr. Romeo is responsible for a monthly thought-leading commentary, typically focused on challenging topics impacting the field of musculoskeletal care and the society. He also currently serves as an editor and reviewer on several orthopaedic medical journals.

Due to his accomplishments, Dr. Romeo has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America many years in a row, has been recognized as a Top Doctor for more than 10 years, and is one of fewer than 6% of physicians selected to receive the Patient’s Choice Award on a consistent basis. He lectures and keynotes at orthopaedic conferences across the United States and around the world.

His other personal achievements include high school valedictorian, a member of the University of Notre Dame football team, and selected the Best All-Around Medical Student from his class at St. Louis University. He has numerous patents related to the devices and techniques that he has developed to improve the care of patients with orthopaedic conditions.

When he is not in the office or operating room, lecturing and mentoring other healthcare providers, or leading professional societies as well as those in his practice, Dr. Romeo enjoys spending time with his wife and family, including his daughters, grandchildren, and parents. His interest in sports extends outside of his career as he has established a habit of daily fitness training, which allows him to fully enjoy recreational activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and whatever his family decides to participate in.
