Get to know Emergency Physician Dr. Jon Karroll, who served patients in Yuma, Arizona.
Dr. Karroll was a respected doctor, beloved husband, father, brother, nephew, uncle, and friend. He passed away at the age of 69 after living with pancreatic cancer for nearly 5 years.
Born in Roslyn Heights, New York, Dr. Karroll moved with his family to Pennsylvania and then to southern California in 1961, where he grew to adulthood and raised his family. He attended both Granada Hills and Edison High Schools where he ran track and cross country beginning a lifelong love of running. He then attended Long Beach State and completed his college education at UCLA before attending medical school in the Dominican Republic. He graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in 1983, and went on to complete his residency in family medicine at McLeod Regional Medical Center in 1986.
He met his wife of 26 years, Ann Hildenstab Karroll, while working as an MD at First Care Urgent Care where Ann was employed as a nurse. Soon after that, Dr. Karroll began commuting to Yuma, Arizona several times a month to work in the Emergency Department at Yuma Regional Medical Center. He worked in Yuma for 23 years, eventually becoming part owner of the Emergency Department practice.
When he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2017, Dr. Karroll took a hiatus. However, once his health was stabilized, he returned to work in emergency medicine at Yuma Regional and then at Exer Urgent Care in Stevenson Ranch, California as a site medical director. He continued working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic despite being immunocompromised because he felt a responsibility to serve and he loved a challenge. He continued working until just 2 weeks before he passed away on October 22nd, 2022.
One of Dr. Karroll’s greatest joys was fathering his 2 sons. His son, Jordan, graduated from medical school and has chosen to work in emergency medicine like his father, while his other son, Alex, has secured a job with his dream company immediately after graduating from college.
An avid mountaineer and backpacker during his early 20’s, Dr. Karroll continued hiking throughout his life, summiting White Mountain and Mt. Whitney, each over 14,000 feet elevation, in solo hikes on 2 consecutive weekends.
He is survived by his wife, Ann, whom he adored, and his two wonderful sons, Jordan and Alex, who he had the joy of watching grow into fine young men.
