Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Ruth F. Lavigne, who serves patients in Pikeville, Kentucky. 

Dr. Lavigne is a board-certified radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of breast and women’s cancer, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and image-guided radiation therapy. She is affiliated with the Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky.

Throughout her academic career, she earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She then went on to complete her residency in radiation oncology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where she served as chief resident. Dr. Lavigne also holds a Master of Business Administration from the American Graduate School of International Management. 

A member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the doctor is board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is one of 24 national medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Radiation oncology is one of the three primary specialties, the other two being surgical and medical oncology, involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation (such as megavoltage X-rays or radionuclides) in the treatment of cancer.
