Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Genea A. Lawrence, who serves patients in Kensington, Maryland.

Fluent in both English and Spanish, Dr. Lawrence is a knowledgeable and supportive obstetrician-gynecologist at Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group Kensington. She has a strong interest in the gynecological care of adolescent patients, but also enjoys high-risk obstetrics and minimally invasive surgery.

“I joined the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group because it is everything that I feel a healthcare delivery system should be – multiple specialties collaborating together to take better care of the total patient.  Kaiser Permanente is well known to have one of the best electronic medical records, which allows multiple specialties to document in one place.  This helps physicians provide better care to their patients by keeping them from repeating unnecessary tests and helping each other follow up on results, as well as making sure that all preventative care testing is done in a timely fashion.  Also, we have each patient’s medical history documented and available at the push of a button” expressed the doctor.

Her interest in medicine began when she was in high school and had a love and talent for science. She wanted to find a career that involved science but also working with people and helping them improve their lives.

In 1999, Dr. Lawrence graduated with her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She then went on to perform her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2003.

Continuously improving the health of women, she is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.

“I like being a physician because I have the opportunity to work with women. I truly believe that by keeping a woman healthy you keep a whole family healthy. In many families and cultures, it is the woman who takes on the task of making sure everyone in the family is eating well, getting exercise, eliminating unhealthy behaviors like smoking and poor eating habits, and keeping their doctor’s appointments. When a doctor gives a woman medical advice, she will often take it to her family and friends who, in turn, take it to their family and friends. Women are the doctor’s best source of community outreach and education” stated Dr. Lawrence.

Her philosophy of care is that the best way to care for patients is by listening to what they have to say. Most physicians learn in medical school that by simply taking a patient’s history, one can figure out what is wrong with them and what will work best for them to help make them better.

Licensed to practice medicine in Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland, Dr. Lawrence is affiliated with the following hospitals: Holy Cross Hospital-Silver Spring, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and Sibley Memorial Hospital.

Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts). An obstetrician-gynecologist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases and disorders that affect women, such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, and menopause. Additionally, they work with expecting mothers throughout their pregnancies, during childbirth, and into postpartum.
