  • Do mood stabilizers help with anger issues?

Yes, often they do help with irritability and anger. READ MORE

  • When is anger pathological?

Getting angry when there’s an obvious reason is expected and should lead to thinking about what happened and how to respond and anticipate the future. Getting angry and staying angry without having the motivation or capacity to think about why and what to do sounds like a problem. Thoughts about hurting others are dangerous. Please see a psychotherapist or a pastoral counselor or a primary care doctor if you’re having trouble. READ MORE

  • Are SSRIs bad for you long-term?

Not in any way. If you have side effects those go away when you stop the medication. There are no long term negative effects and if SSRIs are effective for symptoms, the symptoms are usually more dangerous to the individual than transient medication side effects. READ MORE

  • Should antidepressants cause weight gain?

Only if you find they make you more hungry and you take in more calories. They can’t cause weight gain without you eating more calories. Most do not cause increased hunger. READ MORE

  • When should you see a doctor for anxiety?

When anxiety interferes with activities of daily life, you should see a doctor, ideally a psychiatrist. Very important: as some doctors are less aware of the range of treatments, do NOT get started on daily doses of tranquilizers like Valium (diazepam), Ativan (lorazepam), or Xanax (alprazolam). That leads to greater depression and worse anxiety if you skip a dose. Tranquilizers are good for occasional use, but not daily use. READ MORE

  • Can chest pain from anxiety last for days?

I know that pain in the chest or abdomen can be caused by anxiety but that is the last cause on the list. Any 35 year old man needs to see his primary care doctor for a check-up and an EKG to be sure it isn’t cardiac. READ MORE
