Get to know Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Benakar F. Batista, who serves patients in Santa Rosa, California.
A trusted obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Batista is in practice at Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa Medical Way. She decided to specialize in obstetrics and gynecology because it continues to give her the opportunity to forge long-lasting relationships with her patients, and to see them through multiple stages of their lives. She is passionate about global women’s health and health education.
“I am thrilled and feel privileged to work at Kaiser Permanente, which has been long known for providing the highest quality of healthcare to its members, by greatly emphasizing on preventive care. I am dedicated not only to treat my patients, but also to teach them about disease prevention, and most importantly to learn from them how to best care for their health in the long term” expressed the doctor.
Born in New York City to Bissau-Guinean and Cabo Verdean parents, she spent the first half of her life overseas, and witnessed the impact that access to healthcare or lack thereof can have in a family or a community. Whether in Africa, Europe or the United States, she watched and realized that people are at their most vulnerable when they are ill or a family member is ill. As a physician, she always makes it a priority to provide a warm and open environment for her patients to feel that they are being heard, and that all their concerns are being addressed.
Throughout her academic career, Dr. Batista graduated with her medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Tripler Army Medical Center. During her time in the military, she had the privilege to provide care to women in the United States, and abroad.
Her experience in countries with limited resources showed her how medical systems can become overburdened when patients are only able to seek care when extremely ill. She learned the crucial value of preventive medicine and its impact on everyone’s quality of life, by participating in many culturally sensitive health education campaigns.
An expert in her field, the doctor is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.
On a professional level, Dr. Batista is an active member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Sonoma County Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the American Medical Writer Association.
Obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) is the medical specialty that encompasses the two subspecialties of obstetrics (covering pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period) and gynecology (covering the health of the female reproductive system – vagina, uterus, ovaries, and breasts).
