Get to know Interventional Cardiologist Dr. C. Mark Newton, who serves patients in Midlothian, Virginia.

Dr. Newton, a seasoned interventional cardiologist, is a part of the team of professionals at Virginia Cardiovascular Specialists. He practices out of Harbourside Medical Center in Midlothian, Virginia.

In practice for over four decades, the doctor’s areas of expertise cover all facets of cardiovascular intervention (angioplasty and stenting, carotid artery stenting, cardiac catheterization and angiography, peripheral vascular disease and intervention), as well as endovascular medicine and preventative medicine.

In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Newton graduated with his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1981. He then went on to complete his internship, residency in internal medicine, and fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at the Medical College of Virginia.

A Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC), he is board-certified in internal medicine, interventional cardiology, cardiovascular disease, and endovascular medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Interventional cardiology is the subspecialty of cardiology that deals specifically with the catheter-based treatment of heart diseases. The field includes the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, vascular disease, and acquired structural heart disease. An interventional cardiologist is a cardiologist with one to two years of additional education and training in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease, as well as congenital and structural heart conditions through catheter-based procedures, such as angioplasty and stenting.
