In practice since 1983, he sees patients at Scottsdale Facial & Oral Surgery and at Spectrum Oral & Facial Surgery in Gilbert, Arizona. His professional interests include surgical management of clefts, TMJ disorders, facial cosmetic surgery, corrective jaw surgeries, as well as facial trauma and reconstructive surgery.

In the early days of his academic career, Dr. Bertz attended dental school at Ohio State University, graduating with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. He then performed his residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at UT Southwestern’s Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. He also holds a medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is board-certified through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which is the only certifying board for the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery in the United States. He is also the recipient of Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2016) and Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2015).

Dr. Bertz’s expertise in cleft lip and palate surgeries has taken him around the world on medical missions to help underserved populations. He has also served as President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and has held various faculty positions at the University of Texas and Baylor University.

To date, he maintains hospital privileges at Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center, Scottsdale Shea Medical Center, and Scottsdale Thompson Peak Medical Center.
