Get to know Family Physician Dr. Matthew Maximilian O’Brien, who serves patients in Wilmington, Delaware.

Dr. O’Brien is a patient-focused, family physician who believes in personalized care in order to maximize well-being and quality of life. He sees patients at his family-friendly medical practice, Brandywine Hundred Family Medicine, located in Wilmington, Delaware.

It is Dr. O’Brien’s belief that everyone needs to be treated as a person, not as a number or a group. He understands that, despite questionable times (insurance/health care), a patient is a person who is a unique individual and who should be addressed in that manner.

In addition to his affiliation with Christiana Care Hospital System, he is an appointed Clinical Instructor for the Christiana Care Family Practice residency program, as well as in the Clinician Educator Track at Jefferson Medical College.

Born and raised in Wilmington, both of Dr. O’Brien’s parents were physicians, as are two of his siblings. He is a graduate of Columbia University, with a degree in Applied Physics Engineering. He worked for a local chemical company before realizing that it was not his calling. He returned to school and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1997. He completed his internship and residency in family and community medicine at Christiana Care in 2000 and has been practicing with an individualistic approach in Wilmington since that time.

Dedicated to his specialty, the doctor is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine, a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties. He is also a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of Delaware, and the Delaware Academy of Medicine.

Family medicine is a medical specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. A family physician is often the first person a patient sees when seeking healthcare services. They examine and treat patients with a wide range of conditions and refer those with serious ailments to a specialist or appropriate facility.
