Dr. Stevens is a 1980-graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York. He then completed a transitional internship year at the National Naval  Medical Center at Bethesda  Maryland(1980-1981) and a residency in neurosurgery at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education (1984 – 1990). 

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in neurosurgery through the American Board of Neurological Surgery. The broad aim of the American Board of Neurological Surgery is to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards, and advance the science of neurological surgery, and thereby to serve the cause of public health.

A member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Dr. Stevens is also a Fellow of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (FAANS).
