He then went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001. He performed his internship and residency in anesthesiology at Emory University Hospital, where he served as chief resident and graduated in 2005. Following his training, Dr. Wheeler received board certification in anesthesiology through the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938. The ABA partners with physicians to advance lifelong learning, exceptional patient care, and the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. Anesthesiology, as a medical specialty, focuses on the total perioperative period--the care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have multiple responsibilities which include: confirming that patients are fit for surgery, and if not, optimizing them, determining the best anesthetic for each patient and procedure, executing this plan during surgery, and monitoring recovery afterward. Dr. Wheeler has many non-clinical interests. He is a member of the Greater Atlanta Society of Anesthesiologists, the Georgia Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Medical Association. He has served on his hospital's medical executive committee for 12 years and currently serves on the board of Northside Anesthesiology Consultants. He enjoys the team approach to providing anesthesia and values strong relationships with his patients and colleagues on the anesthesia and surgical care team. Dr. Wheeler resides in Atlanta, Georgia. In his spare time, he enjoys commercial aviation, international travel, cooking and the culinary scene, playing with his puppies, and frequently visiting relatives with his spouse in Southern France.
