Get to know Cardiologist Dr. Laura Murphy, who serves the Toledo area at her private practice, and the University of Toledo Medical Center. Dr. Murphy attended the University of Toledo College of Medicine for medical school and graduated in 1996. She then went on to participate in her residency at the Boston University Medical Center in internal medicine and continued her studies with fellowships in both cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Maryland. Dr. Murphy additionally participated in a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplant at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Murphy has been certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in cardiovascular disease and currently practices in the Toledo, Ohio region. Prior to her work in Ohio, Dr. Murphy practiced in Shreveport, Louisiana. Dr. Murphy specializes in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating diseases or conditions of the heart and blood vessels and the cardiovascular system. These conditions include heart attacks, heart murmurs, coronary heart disease, and hypertension. She ensures that each and every one of her patients is well-cared for in every aspect of her practice. To stay current in her field, Dr. Murphy maintains a professional membership with the American College of Cardiology. In addition to practicing cardiology, Dr. Murphy practices preventative medicine, which allows her to keep her patients healthy and happy. Cardiology is a branch of internal medicine. A cardiologist is not the same as a cardiac surgeon. A cardiac surgeon opens the chest and performs heart surgery, whereas a cardiologist specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the cardiovascular system. The cardiologist will carry out tests and they may perform some procedures, such as heart catheterization, angioplasty or pacemaker insertion. Dr. Murphy also holds a position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toledo Medical Center, which allows her to train the next generation of doctors with the most up-to-date procedures. She is able to show students the most effective ways to treat patients, which helps further her contributions to the field.
