Get to know Podiatrist Dr. Sheila A. Wright, who serves patients in Michigan.

As a podiatric physician and surgeon for over thirty years, Dr. Wright has helped thousands of patients regain their active lifestyle. At her private practice in Southfield, Michigan, she continues to serve her community, mentor students and care for patients. She is known for her compassionate bedside manner and exceptional surgical results. When asked what separates her from many of her colleagues?  She replied  “Attention to aesthetics. I’ve always believed that appearance and function are equally important. Providing cosmetic surgical relief to feet that are also painful is very rewarding for the patient, and has been a mainstay for many years.”

Professionally speaking, Dr. Wright received her undergraduate degree with honors from   Wayne State University. As a student at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, she received  the Clarence Clement Award for academic achievement along with honors in surgery. As such, she was accepted to a highly selective rotation at Straith Hospital for Plastic Surgery prior to graduation.

Upon graduation, she continued residency training at the Michigan Health Center with rotations in emergency medicine, orthopedics, as well as general and cardiovascular surgery. She then  continued podiatric trauma and reconstructive surgical training at the Miami Veterans Administration Hospital.

Entering private practice in 1991 in Southfield, Michigan, Dr. Wright became board-certified in 1998. She was recognized as the first female attending surgeon at the most nationally recognized hospital for foot surgery. She trained podiatric surgical residents at Kern and Detroit Mercy Hospital for over ten years. She holds an international license in Bermuda, where she admits she enjoys frequent vacations with her family to her grandmother’s homeland.

She is a frequent speaker on radio and in the media to encourage awareness of the effects of diabetes on the lower extremity. She says it’s essential that regular exams are performed to assess the presence of neuropathy and vascular compromise. Either of these can develop without the patient feeling any problems until they are advanced. To prevent infection, ulceration and even gangrene self exams and podiatric visits to monitor blood circulation and nerve status is essential. Throughout the pandemic she has offered online consultations and has recently hosted a blog for patients to learn all about feet at www. SimplyFeet.us.
