The mission of Pulmonary and Critical Care Specialist, a Division of Virginia Medical Specialists, is to assist patients with their pulmonary needs with compassion, respect, and dignity.

Some of the procedures that Dr. Silva performs include: breathing test, bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy, respirator management, and thoracentesis. Additionally, he treats conditions such as: atelectasis, bronchiectasis, bronchiolitis, bronchitis, lung cancer, lung nodule, mycobacterial lung infection, pleural effusion, respiratory failure, rheumatoid lung disease, sarcoidosis, shortness of breath, sleep apnea, and much more. 

In collaboration with Bon Secours, he is affiliated with Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center and Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. He has been a member of the American Heart Association Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia since 2004. 

Born in Nicaragua, Dr. Silva completed his medical degree at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua. He did his internship in internal medicine and his residency at the Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens. He then completed a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at the same institute, and later a second fellowship in critical care medicine at Montefiore Medical Center. 

With over four decades of experience, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, geriatric medicine, and critical care medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Furthermore, he is board-certified in undersea and hyperbaric medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM). The ABPM is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties that issues “certificates of special knowledge” in the specialty of preventive medicine.

Pulmonology is a medical specialty that deals with diseases involving the respiratory tract.
