Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Patrick Barnwell, who serves patients in Phoenix, Arizona.

Being a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Barnwell ensures the safety of patients who are about to undergo surgery. Currently, he is affiliated with the Abrazo Central Campus in Phoenix, Arizona where he is Chief of Anesthesia.

With nearly three decades of experience in his field, the doctor is also affiliated with Abrazo Scottsdale Campus, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and John C. Lincoln North Mountain Hospital.

Following the completion of his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1993, Dr. Barnwell went on to complete his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in 1997. 

Before long, he became board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. 

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.
