Get to know Pediatric Rheumatologist Dr. Kathryn Cook, who serves patients in Akron, Ohio.

Dr. Cook is a pediatric rheumatologist at Akron Children’s Hospital where she has been practicing since 2017. Her areas of clinical interest include juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), vasculitis, juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM), lupus, periodic fever syndromes and autoinflammatory syndromes.

Akron Children’s Hospital is dedicated to improving the health of children through outstanding quality patient care, education, advocacy, community service and research. Academically, Dr. Cook earned a Master of Science degree in clinical research from Case Western Reserve University and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed a residency at Akron Children’s Hospital and a fellowship at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, as well as a fellowship in academic medicine at Northeast Medical Ohio University.

An expert in her field, the doctor is board-certified in pediatric rheumatology and pediatrics by the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics (AOBP). The AOBP is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical diseases in infants, children, and adolescents.

Continuously advancing her efforts, she is an active member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Rheumatology, the Childhood Arthritis & Rheumatology Research Alliance, and the Pediatric Rheumatology Collaborative Study Group.

Pediatric rheumatology is a specialized field of medicine that treats children who suffer from pain in the musculoskeletal system and autoimmune disorders, the majority of which cause inflammation. Pediatric rheumatologists evaluate, diagnose, and treat conditions such as: autoimmune disorders, including juvenile idiopathic arthritis, lupus, scleroderma, post-infectious arthritis, and chronic vasculitis; inflammatory disorders of the muscle, eye or other organs; unexplained chronic musculoskeletal pain, weakness, poor appetite, fatigue, and/or loss of function or skills; and unexplained symptoms such as a fever that won’t go away, anemia, rash, weight loss or joint swelling.
