A reputable cardiologist, Dr. Kao’s interests are clinical cardiology, exercise physiology, heart failure, heart transplantation, and heart assist devices.  

At present, he serves as the Medical Director of Heart Transplantation at Saint Luke’s Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. He is also the medical director of the  Cardiopulmonary Exercise Laboratory at Saint Luke’s.  

Having been in the Kansas City metro area since 2004, Dr. Kao believes in empowering patients to take the best possible care of themselves through intense education and individualized care.  Guideline-mandated therapy must be tailored to each patient’s unique medical problems and beliefs. His passion is educating fellow physicians and patients about the many recent advances which have been made in heart failure in order to help patients take better care of themselves, and in order for physicians to be aware of the advantages and challenges of available heart failure therapies.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Kao graduated with his Pritzker School of Medicine of the University of Chicago in 1988. He then went on to perform his residency at University of Minnesota Medical Center in 1989, and his fellowships in cardiovascular disease at Duke University Medical Center & Oregon Health and Science University.

Continuously advancing his efforts, he is board-certified in cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure & transplant cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Named a Super Doctor, Dr. Kao is affiliated with the 10 hospitals of the Saint Luke’s Heatlth System Kansas City and practices primarily at its Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City and also provides consultaiton at Mercy Hospital Joplin, in Joplin, Missouri.

Holding an academic title, he serves as a Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri- Kansas City School of Medicine.
