Get to know Neurointerventional and Neuroimaging Expert Dr. Neeraj Chaudhary, who serves Adult and Pediatric patients in Michigan.

Dr. Chaudhary is a physician/surgeon neuroscientist, a neurovascular imaging expert, and a practicing Neurointerventionalist certified by ABNS (American Board of Neurosurgery), ABR (American BOard of Radiology), ABPN (American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology) in  Recognition of Focused Practice – RFP in CNS-ES (Central Nervous System-Endovascular Surgery) and by the European Board of Neurointervention (EBNI). He treats neurovascular and other diseases of the brain and spinal cord, including its bony casing, plus head, neck, face and orbit vascular malformations, in both adults and children. He is also certified in General Surgery (Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, – MRCS, UK) and Clinical Radiology (Fellow of the Royal College of Radiologists – FRCR, UK) and in Neuroradiology (CAQ, ABR). 

In affiliation with the University of Michigan Health – Michigan Medicine, Dr. Chaudhary offers his services at the University of Michigan, Frankel Cardiovascular Center and C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. 

Apart from his primary appointment as Professor in the Department of Radiology, he has dry appointments in the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, and Otorhinolaryngology. In the spirit of collaborative care for patients, which is at the core of the mission of Michigan Medicine, his team is part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center (where he is NIR and Stroke Lead), Spine Oncology Program, and the Retinoblastoma treatment program at the institution.

With a diverse training background, Dr. Chaudhary graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata in India in 1996. He then performed his graduate and postgraduate training in general surgery (MRCS UK – 2000) and general radiology (FRCR UK – 2006) in the United Kingdom followed by fellowships in Neurointerventional Radiology (NIR) and Neuro-diagnostic Radiology (NDR) in adults and children in National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN, University College London Hospitals NHS Trust – 2008) London, England, and at the University of Michigan in the United States (2009). 

His training in neurointerventional and neurodiagnostic radiology was further reinforced by apprenticeship in advanced neuroimaging and neurointerventional procedures in the pediatric population at the Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, United Kingdom (probably one of the busiest Pediatric Neurovascular practices in the world) as part of his training at NHNN Queen Square (2006 -2008). He then joined the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan as faculty from 2009 after completing another year of Fellowship in the children’s hosptial at the same institution.

Experienced in using medical imaging to guide minimally invasive treatment techniques, he has been a practicing Neurointerventionalist for over 15 years. The doctor is board-certified in diagnostic radiology, neuroradiology, by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is one of 24 national medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties.

With membership status in a number of professional organizations, Dr. Chaudhary is affiliated with the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the European Society of Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ESMINT), the American Stroke Association (ASA), the European Stroke Organization (ESO), the European Society of Neuro-Radiology (ESNR), the World Stroke Organization (WSO), the Society of Neurointerventional Surgery (SNIS), the British Society of Neuroradiology (BSNR), and the United Kingdom Neurointerventional Group (UKNG).

Neurointerventional Radiology (NIR) designates a young established specialty which uses image guidance techniques to minimally invasively treat diseases of the blood supply to the brain and spinal cord. It treats the third leading cause of death in the country, Ischemic Stroke in Brain, apart from Brain aneurysms, arterio-venous malformations, and dural arterio-venous fistula. The specialty also treats carotid plaques with carotid stents, venous stent in brain venous sinus for Idiopathic intracranial Hypertension (IIH), Intra-arterial chemotherapy for retinoblastoma, and Vein of Galen malformations.  

Neuroradiology is a subspecialty of radiology focusing on the diagnosis and characterization of abnormalities of the central and peripheral nervous system, spine, and head and neck using neuroimaging techniques. A neuroradiologist has completed additional specialized training in neuroradiology to focus on interpreting images of the central nervous system – the brain, spinal cord, and surrounding structures.

Diagnostic Radiology refers to the field of medicine that uses non-invasive imaging scans to diagnose a patient. The tests and equipment used sometimes involve low doses of radiation to create highly detailed images of an area. A diagnostic radiologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating disease and injury, using medical imaging techniques such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography (PET), fusion imaging, and ultrasound. Image guidance is used to minimally invasively treat diseases of the blood vessels and visceral organs of the body and hence is called Vascular and Visceral Interventional Radiology (VIR). 

With over 215 peer reviewed publications to his name, Dr. Chaudhary is a keen translational researcher of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke. He extensively reviews manuscripts for several national and international journals of repute in the fields of neurointervention and neuroimaging. 

On a more personal note, he speaks multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Sanskrit.
