  • Acne Scars: Safe, Simple, Inexpensive & Time-Tested Treatments

In my daily practice devoted to treating all kinds of scars, most especially those arising from acne, I'm sorry to say that I routinely consult with patients who have not only suffered from years of acne but subsequently years of fruitless, disappointing attempts to treat the resultant acne scars....

  • Rejuvenating The Upper Face--Things CAN Look Up

Up to now, I've discussed the use of robust, injectable volumizing and lifting fillers for framing the face by treating the temples, as well as the rear angles of the jaw and chin. I  also emphasized that it is no longer considered de rigeur to jump right into treating smile lines or sad lines...

  • Your Eyes: More Than Just Windows To The Soul--The Soul Of Youth

In my last blog, I discussed how natural, hyaluronic acid fillers (which are all basically complex sugars) can rejuvenate the "frame of the face" by lifting and volumizing the cheeks to recreate the ideal heart-shaped, high cheekboned look, and diminish tear troughs, smile lines, and sad lines. I...

  • Framing The Face With Fillers For A Fabulous More Youthful Look

In my last blog post, I explained how aesthetic medical science had made a giant leap forward about fifteen years ago when research findings put a new face to facial aging. We learned that so much of the sagging, drooping, jowls, and deep lines and crevices that appear with the passing decades,...

  • Getting That Immediate "Wow!" Nonsurgical "Liquid" Facelifts

About fifteen years ago a revolution took place in our understanding of what actually happens to us below the skin as we age. Until that time, the lay public, as well as their doctors, believed that the sagging of the skin that inevitably occurred with the passage of each decade from about age...

  • Raised Acne Scars: Quick & Simple Fixes To Flatten Them

In my previous blog, I discussed the various quick, simple and inexpensive ways to elevate and smooth sunken, indented boxcar, rolling and ice pick scars. However, not uncommonly, particularly when moderate to severe in nature, nodulocystic acne breakouts can give rise to several different kinds of...

  • Seborrheic dermatitis face product?

Seborrheic dermatitis is a form of eczema and usually runs in families. It is characterized by oils, scales, itchiness and redness. Using moisturizers for the scan can make it worse, and attempting to dry out oilyness can also make it worse. It is best to see a dermatologist who can prescribe a topical antiinflammatory agent--a real medicine and not an OTC product. READ MORE

  • What is the cause of back acne?

The primary cause of acne in general is genetics, i.e. a family trait history for acne, and where that acne appears, i.e. face, shoulders, chest or back is predetermined by genetics and at what age each area flares up is also genetically predetermined in most cases. READ MORE

  • What causes pimples on shoulders ?

Genetics is the root cause of acne appearing in any area, as is how severe the acne will be in a particular area and at what age it will flare up in that area. READ MORE

  • Is baking soda good for back acne?

Sorry, baking soda does not top the list for anti-acne treatments. For OTC meds, you are better off looking for benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, or salicylic acid products. READ MORE

  • Why am I suddenly getting back acne?

Where acne flares up and at what age it does is for the most part genetically predetermined. So, it was written into your genetic software that your back would have an acne breakout in your early twenties. Back acne is generally tougher to treat and slower to respond than facial acne, so you may wish to see a dermatologist sooner than later to get started on appropriate aggressive treatments before scarring results. READ MORE

  • What causes skin tags in armpits?

Genetics is the cause of skin tags. They usually show up in folds of the skin, such as around the eyes, around the neck, under the arms, and in the groin. Removing some does nothing to prevent new ones from appearing, which they almost inevitably do with time. Fortunately, they are quite easy and pretty quick and nearly painless for a dermatologist to remove. A dozen can be removed in a couple of minutes in experienced hands. READ MORE

  • Does the sun help back acne?

The sun is an enemy of the skin. Any benefit in "drying up" acne or masking it in a suntan will be offset a few weeks later by a breakout triggered by the damage the UV rays did a few weeks earlier. Skip the sun as an acne treatment. It typically backfires. READ MORE

  • Does it hurt to have skin tags removed?

Nope. A tiny drop of local anesthesia and off they go in a few seconds. READ MORE

  • Why does having fair skin make you more likely to get skin cancer?

The more melanin (skin pigment) one has, the more protected the skin from the sun's harmful UV rays. Light skinned people have less pigment and therefore more prone to sun damage. READ MORE

  • Acne dark spot?

The use of that very potent cream should be under a dermatogist's supervision. However, generally speaking, if applied only to the brown spot, it is usually OK. Applied to acne acne sites or if those get contaminated with the product, the acne may flare up. READ MORE

  • What is the best moisturizer for oily skin?

A hypoallergenic moisturizer that is oil free or water-based or labelled as "for oily skin." However, most people with truly oily skin do not need an additional moisturizer. Manufacturers still cannot produce a moisturizer better than our own natural oils. READ MORE

  • What can a dermatologist prescribe for hair loss?

Dermatologists have a variety of oral and topical medications to prescribe for what I am presuming here to be female pattern hair loss. Most start with topical minoxidil solution in varying concentrations to which compounded topical finasteride solution may be added. Topical azelaic acid may also prove helpful. The oral use of minoxidil and spironolactone may prove helpful. Some products are commercially available; others need to be compounded at special compounding pharmacies. And all need to be used under the strict supervision and follow-up of the doctor. READ MORE

  • How does a dermatologist check for hair loss?

Hair loss is evaluated by a variety of methods depending upon the presumptive diagnosis. These include visual (clinical) examination; hair pluck analysis under the microscope, biopsy of scalp, and blood tests, depending once again on the suspected etiology. READ MORE

  • What is the best treatment for skin cancer?

If your spot is truly a mole that has been found to have mole cancer, i.e. malignant melanoma, it should be surgically removed and sent back to the lab to ensure that it has been completely removed. READ MORE

  • Does lotion can reduce moles?

Absolutely a bad idea to do any home treatments that may lighten or destroy moles. They must be examined first by a dermatologists to ensure that none may be a wolf in sheep's clothing and harboring a very serious form of mole cancer known as malignant melanoma. READ MORE

  • What causes your hands to peel?

Hand eczema can be caused by alergic contact dermatitis or irritant dermatitis to items or products that are frequently handled. Or it may be a manifestation of atopic dermatitis. Because the hands are constantly coming in contact with the world, and nowadays with constant Corona-related hand washing, the use of hand sanitizers and disinfecting agents, hand irritation and eczema is being seen more frequently in my practice. In most case, if it persists, it needs to be evaluated and treated by a dermatologist. READ MORE

  • What does psoriasis look like on the elbows?

Usually thick scaly, flaky patches sitting over a red base. READ MORE

  • Can coconut oil remove stretch marks?

Stretch marks are difficult even for professionals to treat, but there are real treatments, like professional medical microneedling, the use of certain chemical peels and the injection of skin boosters. Coconut oil will do little but moisturize your skin. READ MORE

  • Why is my mole turning darker?

The ABCDE is a warning sign system for the lay public to evaluate moles (beauty marks and birth marks) for a potentially serious problem known as malignant melanoma--a potentially deadly disease. A stands for asymmetry, if one side of the mole doesn't look just like the other side. B stands for border, i.e. the border is irregular like the coast of Maine or California, rather than smooth. C stands for color--if there are variegations of colors: red, white, blue, back, purple, very dark brown, rather than a lighter even tone of brown. D stands for diameter, i.e. if the mole diameter is larger than a pencil eraser. And finally, E, if the mole is evolving, i.e. changing size, shape, color, begins to itch, become tender, bleed or scale. Your mole is changing in color--getting darker. That means you get to a dermatologist for evaluation. And it is extremely important you do so asap. READ MORE

  • How often should I get a laser facial?

First, since lasers are backed far more by marketing and medspa hype than hard science, the first question should not be "How often," but whether you should be spending your money on these treatments in the first place. I don't know what exactly you wish to treat, but I feel fairly confident that there is likely to be a better, more cost-effective way to achieve what you want than with laser facials. READ MORE
