Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. James J. Taylor, who serves patients in Salem, Virginia.

Dr. Taylor is a reputable cardiothoracic surgeon on the surgical staff of LewisGale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia & the physician staff of LewisGale Physicians Cardiothoracic Surgery.

On the subject of his educational background, Dr. Taylor earned his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from Seton Hall University in 1985. Five years later, in 1990, he obtained his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

As for his training, he completed his residencies in general surgery at Saddlebrook Hospital and Peninsula Hospital General Surgery in 1992 and 1995, respectively. This was followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at Deborah Heart & Lung Center in 1998.

A Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (FACOS), the doctor is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Heart Association, the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association, the Missouri Osteopathic Medical Association, the Kansas Osteopathic Medical Association, the Nevada Osteopathic Medical Association, and the Clark County Medical Society.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs. 

In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Taylor has been honored with several awards and recognitions, including Robert C. Erwin National Literary Achievement Award by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (1997), Super Doctor for Cardiac Surgery by Texas Monthly Magazine (2004), Featured Physician in Texas Medicine Men (2006), Meritorious Community Service Award by the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (2008), Reader’s Choice Award by the San Angelo Standard-Times (2011), and Favorite Physician Award Year by the San Angelo Standard-Times, among others.
