A revered figure in the field of pediatric orthopedics, Dr. Bennett officially retired from clinical practice after a remarkable career spanning over four decades. He currently serves as a Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at Tulane University School of Medicine, having dedicated his life to the treatment and care of children with spinal deformities.
Born and raised in New Orleans, his academic journey began at Tulane University, where he graduated with a degree in engineering in 1974 before earning his medical degree in 1978. His pursuit of excellence continued with an orthopedic residency at the University of North Carolina, which included a pivotal year at the Alfred duPont Institute. He further honed his skills through a fellowship at Scottish Rite Hospital/Emory in Atlanta, Georgia.
Upon returning to his hometown, Dr. Bennett was appointed as a Professor of Orthopaedics and took on the role of Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedics at Tulane University. His clinical interests have primarily focused on scoliosis and spinal deformity, encompassing both operative and non-operative management. Dr. Bennett is well-known for being the first surgeon in Louisiana to introduce minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery utilizing an O-arm for scoliosis treatment, a groundbreaking advancement that has significantly improved patient outcomes.
Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his dedication to patient care and medical education. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and the American Board of Spine Surgeons, and he has mentored countless medical students and residents, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of physicians.
