Dr. Martin is an accomplished cardiothoracic surgeon. Since 2010 he has served as the Medical Director of Borgess Cardiothoracic Surgery, which is a part of the Borgess Heart Institute at Ascension Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Prior to this, he was in private practice at a number of hospitals in the Metro Detroit area, including Ascension St. John Hospital since 1988.

He then earned his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1980. He went on to complete his residency in general surgery and his fellowship in Cardio-thoracic surgery at the Detroit Medical Center.
In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is board-certified in cardiac and thoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest. He has served on the board of directors of the Michigan Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons and remains active in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons nationally.
