Dr. Markoe is a radiation oncologist. He is currently Chairman Emeritus and Professor of Radiation Oncology at the UHealth Radiation Oncology Department of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center – University of Miami Health System in Miami, Florida. As a university-based cancer center, Sylvester physicians and scientists apply research breakthroughs from the laboratory to the patient’s bedside. The Cancer Center closely evaluates the effectiveness of new treatments and shares clinical insights with laboratory investigators, thereby leading to improvements that benefit patient care. Their mission is to reduce the human burden from cancer through research, education, prevention, and the delivery of quality patient care.

Dr. Markoe has established credentials as a clinician, educator, and academic. His clinical interests include: treatment of benign and malignant orbital tumors, head and neck cancer, neurological cancer, lymphoid diseases, high dose-rate brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and re-treatment of previously treated areas.

Dr. Markoe has published extensively and has achieved national and international prominence in the special area of radiation therapy for eye cancer.  

Dr. Markoe is certified in Gamma Knife radiosurgery – a type of precision radiation therapy used to treat tumors, vascular malformations, and other abnormalities in the brain.

Dr. Markoe earned his medical degree from the Drexel University College of Medicine (then Hahnemann Medical College) in 1977. He then went on to complete his residency in radiation oncology at Hahnemann University Hospital (Allegheny) in 1981. Dr. Markoe also completed a doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh and a post-doctoral year before Medical School.. 

Dr. Markoe is board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The ABR is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is one of 24 national medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). The mission of the ABR is to certify that diplomates demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skill, and understanding of their disciplines to the benefit of patients.

Dr. Markoe has received several awards throughout his professional career, including ‘America’s Top Doctors’ from 2009 through 2019 and ‘America’s Top Doctors for Cancer’ from 2008 through 2013 – among others. 

Radiation therapy or radiotherapy is therapy using ionizing radiation, generally as part of cancer treatment to control or kill malignant cells and normally delivered by a linear accelerator. Radiation oncology is one of the three primary specialties, the other two being surgical and medical oncology, involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist, like Dr. Markoe, is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation (such as megavoltage x-rays or radionuclides) in the treatment of cancer.
