Get to know Family Practitioner Dr. Kevin Ferentz, who serves the Baltimore, Maryland area at his private practice, the Ferentz Institute, and at several local hospitals. For twenty-five years, Dr. Ferentz served on the faculty at the University of Maryland School of Medicine where he held several positions including the Residency Director for the Department of Family Medicine. Most recently, Dr. Ferentz served as Chief Medical Officer for Baltimore Medical System, Inc. and as a site medical director at Chase-Brexton Health Services. He is currently the Lead Physician for the GBMC Primary Care office at Owings Mills, Maryland. Dr. Ferentz graduated magna cum laude from State University of New York at Albany, where he majored in Biology and Theater. He received his MD from SUNY at Buffalo School of Medicine and completed his Family Practice residency at the University of Maryland, along with a fellowship in Faculty Development with an emphasis in Obstetrics. He has been board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Ferentz has authored several articles and book chapters concerning issues in family medicine. His academic work centered on smoking cessation and the recognition and treatment of depression in primary care. He received more than two dozen teaching awards, including two national awards: the Exemplary Teaching Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Outstanding Program Director Award from the Association of Family Medicine* Residency Directors. He was named one of the Best Family Physicians by Baltimore Magazine in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2007, and 2010. Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system, as well as every disease entity. The specialist is called a family physician or family doctor. Dr. Ferentz is a past-President of the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians and served on several committees and commissions for the American Academy of Family Physicians. He has done many media spots on TV and for eight years he was the regular host of Sunday Rounds, the largest medical call-in show on public radio, heard nationwide, and around the world on the Armed Forces Radio Network and online.
