  • My mole sample was sent to another lab. Should I be concerned?

If your mole was sent to another lab for second opinion, it does not mean it is necessarily a bad diagnosis. It only means that your pathologist was possibly concerned about something and either wants to make sure that he or she is not overdiagnosing something that is benign but looks little different or they want to make sure that it is something really to worry about and get an accurate diagnosis from an expert. Usually, cases like yours (mole) are sent by general pathologists to dermatopathologists (expert in skin pathology including moles) for second opinion for borderline cases and the treatment can differ based on the diagnosis. The major categories of diagnosis are benign moles (no further treatment), atypical moles (treatment depends on degree of atypia and margins), melanoma in situ (usually wide excision) and melanoma (depends on the stage). • What are the tests to diagnose breast cancer?

Slight pain and heaviness in breasts can be felt during certain periods of your menstural cycle. First thing, you should look for is if there is a pattern of pain with your periods and second to palpate your breast for any lump in your breasts. If you are still concerned or notice any lump in your breast, you should see your family doctor or a surgeon and they can recommend further follow up based on their assessment. The assessment should include history of recent lactation or any family history of breast cancer. Per se, pain and heaviness in breast alone, do not suggest breast cancer. If you have lump or strong family history of breast cancer, the screening tests can include breast ultrasound or mammography to start with, if assessed to be clinically necessary. READ MORE

Pathology is a branch of medical science that involves the study and diagnosis of disease through the examination of surgically removed organs, tissues (biopsy samples), bodily fluids, and in some cases the whole body (autopsy). Aspects of a bodily specimen that may be considered include its gross anatomical make up, appearance of the cells using immunological markers and chemical signatures in the cells. Pathologists specialize in a wide range of diseases including cancer and the vast majority of cancer diagnoses are made by pathologists. The cellular pattern of tissue samples are observed under a microscope to help determine if a sample is cancerous or non-cancerous (benign). Pathologists also employ genetic studies and gene markers in the assessment of various diseases. Dr. Goyal attributes her professional success to her passion for pathology. When not working, she enjoys being outdoors with her kids, cooking, listing to the radio and watching news based programs on TV.
