Dr. Taintor attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, for his undergraduate education, i.e., his Bachelor of Arts Degree, which he acquired in 1958. He then pursued his medical degree at Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University and graduated in 1962. Following a one-year internship at NYU School of Medicine (1962-1963), Dr. Taintor conducted his residency in psychiatry at the  New York Presbyterian Hospital – Cornell Campus (1963 – 1966).

Upon completing his formal training in psychiatry, Dr. Taintor received board certification in psychiatry through the American Board of Neurology and Psychiatry (ABNP). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation that was founded in 1934 as a method of identifying qualified specialists in psychiatry and neurology. The ABPN is one of 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
