He later completed his residency in colorectal surgery at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, followed by his fellowship at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. After completing rigorous academic and professional training, he immediately began practicing in the field.

To continue to expand his skills and share his knowledge, Dr. Martinez is a member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, a professional society for surgeons specializing in colorectal surgery. It is one of the oldest surgical societies, having been established in 1899.

Colorectal surgery is a field in medicine dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon. The field is also known as proctology, but this term is now used infrequently within medicine and is most often employed to identify practices relating to the anus and rectum in particular. Colorectal surgeons specialize in the preoperative, operative, and postoperative care of patients with colorectal disorders. They have comprehensive knowledge about general surgery and in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon.
