Dr. Sima's research focused on testing a natural derivative of the omega-3 fatty acid EPA, namely Resolvin E1, on the immune response mounted in periodontitis and diabetes. He discovered that transgenic mice expressing high levels of the receptor for this compound on innate immune cells (white blood cells), are protected for increased body weight gain, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance while on a high fat diet. He also discovered specific innate immune cell phenotypes that predispose patients who more severe forms of periodontitis. He continues to be involved in clinical and translational research to advance precision periodontal medicine via oral sample testing for markers of disease progression.
