Dr. Mitchell Cohen is a gastroenterologist practicing in Prosser, WA. Dr. Cohen specializes in diagnosing and treating digestive disorders involving the gastrointestinal tract, liver, biliary tree, gallbladder, and the pancreas.

Dr. Cohen was born and raised in Los Angeles, California before attending the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1976 with Special Honors in Chemistry and Biochemistry.  While at UCLA, Dr. Cohen spent his junior year abroad as a University of California Foreign Exchange Student at the University of Stirling in Stirling, Scotland in the United Kingdom.  He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Southern California School of Medicine (USC) in 1981.  He moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center which is the Stanford University-Affiliated County Teaching Hospital located in San Jose, California.  Following this, Dr. Cohen completed a Clinical Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  With a strong interest in academic medicine and research, Dr. Cohen subsequently spent nearly 5 years at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California.  There, he carried out research on the molecular regulation of small intestinal brush border enzymes and published several papers.  He was awarded a Clinical Investigator Award by the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.  While at Stanford, Dr. Cohen also held a Clinical Faculty position teaching medical students, Internal Medicine Residents, and Gastroenterology Fellows.

In late 1991, Dr. Cohen’s focus turned to private practice medicine.  He joined a private practice multispecialty group at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, Washington.  Dr. Cohen served on many hospital committees and eventually became Chief of Gastroenterology for Swedish Medical Center.  While practicing in Seattle, he was named by peers and independent research as a Seattle Super Doctor and was voted by peers as one of Seattle’s Top Physicians in Seattle Magazine.

In 2014, Dr. Cohen left practice at Swedish Medical Center (though remains Honorary Staff) and joined a private practice group in Central Washington, building a very successful Gastroenterology program in Moses Lake, Washington for Confluence Health.  He subsequently spent a short time as Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Medical Director helping build a new Gastroenterology program outside Olympia, Washington for Summit Pacific Medical Center.  Dr. Cohen then joined Prosser Memorial Health in 2021 as Director of Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Services, tasked with the building of a new gastroenterology program, and as a practicing gastroenterologist serving the patients of Benton and surrounding counties.  This new gastroenterology program has grown quickly and will soon have 3 highly skilled and experienced gastroenterologists performing all routine as well as advanced/interventional gastroenterology procedures.

Dr. Cohen is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology.  He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.  He is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University.  He is also Clinical Instructor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
