Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Gerald H. Sokol, who serves patients in Florida.

Recognized internationally for his work on advancing the treatment of skin cancer, Dr. Sokol is a board-certified radiation oncologist who is currently affiliated with Florida Cancer Specialists in Hudson and New Port Richey, Florida. As a leader in medical oncology and hematology, Florida Cancer Specialists is at the forefront of science and research to provide patients with the best treatment possible close to home. The practice provides a full range of cancer services with a demonstrated focus on delivering quality and value through patient-centered, coordinated care.

Dr. Sokol is a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve. Dr. Sokol has served as a Medical Officer at the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research & at the Food and Drug Administration in Washington, D.C. 

Dr. Sokol earned his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his internship and residency training at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Temple University Hospital, and USPHS Hospital (in affiliation with John Hopkins University, the University of Maryland in Baltimore, and the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda). He then went on to complete his fellowship training in radiation medicine/oncology and clinical pharmacology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sokol is certified in skin cancer medicine through training at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Dr. Sokol is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. Dr. Sokol is also board-certified in radiation oncology, quality assurance & utilization review, and clinical pharmacology. Dr. Sokol is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology.

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer either for cure or to reduce pain and other symptoms caused by cancer. Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy) is the term used to describe the actual treatment delivered by the radiation oncology team. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation (such as megavoltage X-rays or radionuclides) in the treatment of cancer.
