Get to know Gastroenterologist & Oncological Surgeon Dr. Matt L. Kirkland, who serves the population of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kirkland graduated with his Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1983, giving him over three decades of experience in his field. After obtaining his Medical Degree he completed his residency with Pennsylvania Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. To stay up to date in his field he remains a professional member of the American Medical Association, American Society for Bariatric Surgery, American Society of General Surgeons, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Philadelphia County Medical Society, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He has also been inducted as a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Kirkland currently practices with Penn Gastrointestinal Surgery Washington Square, Penn Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program Washington Square, and Penn Hernia Program Washington Square, and is affiliated with Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Hospital. He also practices as an Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery with Pennsylvania State University. Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs are part of the study of Gastroenterology.
