What not to do before the mammogram?
There are no technical restrictions on activity before a mammogram. However, some women have discomfort due to the required compression of the breasts. In addition, women develop breast tenderness in response to certain foods or activities. If discomfort is a concern, you may want to have good breast support and prevent jostling (to avoid extra fluid) and avoid caffeine, fatty food, and salt in the hours before your mammogram. A board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Fortier is a preeminent, experienced provider of women’s healthcare known throughout the triangle area for his compassionate, personalized, patient-centered practice style.
He established Fortier Gynecology as an intentionally small and personalized practice for both well-woman and expert gynecologic care and as a place where women can feel comfortable and receive truly individualized professional care from a doctor and staff who know them. He hopes to provide respite from the often rushed and sometimes impersonal experiences in larger more corporate practices.

Specializing in women’s health, he is particularly focused on well-woman care and health screening & gynecologic conditions and needs including management of menopause and perimenopause symptoms, infertility evaluation and treatment, endometriosis, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, abnormal pap smears, vaginitis, sexually transmitted infections, contraception and family planning, and evaluation of breast concerns.
After graduating from Dartmouth College (summa cum laude) and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, Dr. Fortier trained in obstetrics and gynecology and joined the faculty at Duke University School of Medicine, where he was known for patient-centered care and award-winning teaching.
He has since enjoyed private practice of ob/gyn in Raleigh, North Carolina and is currently a Clinical Professor at UNC School of Medicine where he has developed and teaches popular courses on compassion in medical care.
As a testament to his drive, Dr. Fortier is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.
Moreover, he is board-certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath). The mission of ABPath, as a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties, is to serve the public and advance the profession of pathology by setting certification standards and promoting lifelong competency of pathologists.
