Get to know Physiatrist Dr. Rawa Araim, who serves patients in Elmira, New York.

A practiced physiatrist, Dr. Araim is the Medical Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation / Brain Injury Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital, an affiliate of Arnot Health.

St. Joseph’s Hospital located in Elmira, New York, and founded in 1908 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Rochester, New York, is a not-for-profit, 125-bed Catholic hospital specializing in orthopedic care, physical rehabilitation, geriatric medicine, behavioral science, and alcohol rehabilitation. As part of Arnot Health, it is able to ensure access to the highest quality care.

With a broad educational background, Dr. Araim earned her medical degree with a focus on allopathic medicine from Mosul Medical School in Iraq. After relocating to the United States, she went on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. She followed this up by completing a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Nassau University Medical Center and a fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (FAAPMR) and member of the American Osteopathic Association, she is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation by the American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AOBPMR). The AOBPMR is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the treatment of patients with physical impairments or disabilities.

Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry and physiatrics, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. Physiatrists treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
