Get to know Internist Dr. Harvey Allen Shub, who serves patients in Orlando, Florida.

Dr. Shub was born and raised in the bustling borough of Brooklyn, New York, where he spent his formative years. He began his academic journey at New York University (NYU) in 1960, ultimately leading him to complete his undergraduate studies at the University of Miami (UM). At UM, he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology and Physics. Returning to NYU, his academic pursuits shifted toward microbiology and genetics, culminating in a year of graduate school.

In 1965, his quest for medical knowledge took him across the Atlantic to the prestigious University of Rome School of Medicine and Surgery in Italy. After six years of dedication and study, Dr. Shub proudly graduated in 1971, emerging with a Doctor of Medicine Degree. 

Following this, he embarked on a rigorous internship and residency in surgery at two renowned medical institutions in New York City, namely Beth Israel Medical Center and Mount Sinai Medical Center. 

In 1976, Dr. Shub seized the opportunity to further specialize in colon and rectal surgery by undertaking a fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, located at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey. It was during this period that he made the pivotal decision to relocate to Orlando, where he established his own practice on Orange Avenue. 

For more than three decades, Dr. Shub dedicated himself to the field of colon and rectal surgery, delivering exceptional care to his patients.

His remarkable contributions did not go unnoticed, and his expertise led to significant leadership roles. He served as the Chairman of General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery, as well as assumed the presidency of the medical staff at Florida Hospital. His unwavering commitment and accomplishments were recognized through his fellowship with the American College of Surgeons and his reception of the esteemed Physicians Recognition Award on ten occasions since 1976.

In 2007, after four decades of practicing colon and rectal surgery, Dr. Shub embarked on a well-deserved retirement. However, he quickly realized that his passion for medicine still burned brightly, and he had more to offer the field. His initial return involved teaching and conducting Medicare Physicals, but it wasn’t long before he felt the pull to make a more significant impact with his wealth of knowledge and experience. This calling led him to Sunshine State Medical, Inc., where he serves as the Medical Director doing general medicine, EMC, and medical immigration exams, to mention a few.

A firm believer that the calling of a physician is enduring, Dr. Shub continues to provide invaluable care to his patients.

Throughout his career as a colon and rectal surgeon, he achieved several notable milestones that left an indelible mark on the field of medicine. Notably, he performed the pioneering first-ever laser excision of rectal cancer in the United States, a groundbreaking procedure that earned recognition within the medical community. He presented a paper on this groundbreaking experience at the New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. 

Additionally, his expertise shone through in the publication of a seminal paper on the treatment of anal fissures, which is widely regarded as a definitive source in the field.

Alongside his professional accomplishments, Dr. Shub and his wife, Susan, have made their home in Lake Forest, Sanford. They take immense pride in their roles as parents to two children, Carolyn and Todd, and are equally blessed with the joy of a beautiful grandchild named Hannah.
