Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Yvette R. Johnson, who serves patients in Fort Worth, Texas.

A competent neonatologist, Dr. Johnson’s current role at Cook Children’s Medical Center is to serve as the Medical Director of the NICU graduate developmental follow-up program called the N.E.S.T. Developmental Follow-up Center.

Along with her clinical responsibilities caring for high-risk newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit, she has a particular interest in neonatal outcomes and developmental follow-up. She feels she was called to medicine by a passion to serve those in need, particularly the most vulnerable among us.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Johnson graduated with her medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in 1987. She then went on to perform her internship in pediatrics, residency in pediatrics, and fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis Children’s Hospital. She also earned a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, and performed a residency in general preventive medicine at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Subsequent to her education, the doctor attained board certification in neonatal-perinatal medicine and pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Holding fellowship status, Dr. Johnson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially ill or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. Neonatologists generally diagnose and treat newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects, as well as coordinating care and medically managing newborns born prematurely, critically ill, or in need of surgery.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Johnson’s interests include caring for her two children, spending time with family and friends, as well as participating in community service events, reading, and traveling.
