A board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Abdelsalam is the Founder and President of Chicagoland Retinal Consultants, seeing patients at their offices in Chicago, Stickney, and Sycamore, Illinois. His areas of clinical interest include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, strokes of the retina, and flashes and floaters.
Furthermore, he serves as the Chairman of the Medical Executive Committee, the Physician Advisory Board, and the Chief Medical Officer of EyeCare Services Partners.
Chicagoland Retinal Consultants was developed and designed to be patient-centered and to be a true resource for referring physicians. A native of Egypt, Dr. Abdelsalam earned his medical degree from the University of Alexandria Faculty of Medicine. After relocating to the United States, he completed his internal medicine training at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and his residency in ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences of New Jersey Medical School under the direction of Dr. Marco Zarbin. He completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Kresge Eye Institute of Wayne State University in Michigan under the tutelage of Drs. Gary Abrams and Dean Eliott.
Recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.
Moreover, he is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
On a professional level, Dr. Abdelsalam is a frequent presenter at many professional societies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and the American College of Surgeons. Before founding Chicagoland Retinal Consultants in 2004, he served as a full-time faculty member with the Pritzker School of Medicine of the University of Chicago, where he was the Director of the Adult and Pediatric Vitreoretinal Surgery Services.
