Get to know Trauma Surgeon Dr. Paul M. Bauer, who serves patients in the States of New York & New Jersey.

Dr. Bauer is a highly experienced, board-certified trauma surgeon who provides his services to patients in New York and New Jersey. He is currently in practice in the Department of Surgery at NYC Health Hospital in Harlem. Founded in 1887, NYC Health Hospital in Harlem is a 272-bed, public teaching hospital affiliated with Columbia University. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood.

Prior to his current endeavors, Dr. Bauer’s attending experience included time in the Department of Trauma at Penn Health Lancaster General Hospital and Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He has also practiced at Terre Haute Regional Hospital, Merit Health Natchez, Natchez Community Hospital, Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, Central Mississippi Medical Center, Gila Regional Medical Center, Wayne Memorial Hospital, Clarion Hospital, Tri-Lakes Medical Center, MLS Medical Services, St. Barnabas Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Lincoln Hospital and Mental Health Center, Bon Secours Community Hospital, Carlsbad Medical Center, Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, and North Central Bronx Hospital. He also served as an attending surgeon and Director of Trauma at Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City, New Jersey from 2001 until 2002. During his time as the  Director of Trauma with the Jersey City Medical Center, he managed the 9/11 disaster on the day of the event.

After graduating with his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Pace University in New York in 1980, Dr. Bauer went on to earn his Medical Degree from SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, New York in 1987. This was followed by an internship in general surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital from 1987 until 1988 and a residency in general surgery at Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center the same year. He also served as Chief Resident in General Surgery at Brookdale Hospital and Medical Center from 1992 until 1993. 

As for his training, Dr. Bauer completed his fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in 1993 until 1994, followed by his fellowship in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center from 1994 until 1995. Thereafter, he completed his fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care at Lincoln Hospital and Mental Health Center from 2000 until 2001. 

From 2008 until 2010, the doctor served as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, New York. He then went on to serve as an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pennsylvania from 2011 until 2013. Moreover, he served as a Preceptor to ANP Candidate Rutgers University School of Nursing in 2017 and a Preceptor to ANP Candidate Georgetown University School of Nursing in 2018. He is now currently an ATLS Instructor. 

In regards to his committee appointments, he served on the Surgical Intensive Care Unit Interdisciplinary Committee at Lincoln Hospital and Mental Health Center from 2000 until 2001. He was then appointed Chairman of the Multidisciplinary Trauma Committee at Jersey City Medical Center from 2001 until 2002. He also served on the Credentials Committee, the I.C.U. Committee, and the Quality Assurance Committee at Bon Secours Hospital.

In addition to being board-certified in both surgery and surgical critical care by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Bauer is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Furthermore, he is a member of the American Society of General Surgeons, the Bronx County Medical Society, and the Medical Society of the State of New York. 

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting. The main job of a trauma surgeon is to perform operations on patients who have sustained critical injuries. However, trauma surgeons might also perform diagnostic tests and prescribe pre- and post-operative antibiotics or other medications. 

With years of experience in his field, Dr. Bauer has made several publications, including Revision of the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Massive Transfusion Protocol, Jersey Shore University Medical Center Pediatric Transfusion Protocol, Jersey Shore University Medical Center Protocol for C-Spine Clearance in the Obtunded Patient, and Spine Consult Guideline – Management of Isolated Transverse Process and Spinous Process Fractures, and Identification and Surgical Management of Upper Arm and Forearm Compartment Syndrome published in the Cureus, to name a few.
